TinySA is a small pocket-size, sub $100 spectrum analyzer that can provide a reasonably accurate spectral view of 100KHz to 900MHz. The dream came true last week when my dad got me a tinySA. I used to find different ways of sampling the complete spectrum of interest like using a SDR or doing a sweep with VNA, each them have their own drawback too :(. I was badly in need of a spectrum analyzer when I was working with Filters and cavity resonators. Owning a spectrum analyzer was a dream and what kept me away from these was their cost. ![]() The need for spectrum analyzer is understood once you start working with small signals and with systems that a frequency dependent like filters, amplifiers, resonators, etc. While the oscilloscopes show the signal amplitude against time, spectrum analyzer shows the signal amplitude against frequency. One of the most expensive devices is a spectrum analyzer, simply put it like a looking the signal or the spectrum (range of frequencies) in a single glance. Often, the cost of these devices is so high that it becomes a critical bottleneck in the development cycle. ![]() Lab equipment are one of the most expensive devices that one would need will building a new product. ![]() I am sure we all have done it many times, often without even realizing the beauty of the solution.
